Practical guide
From workflow to evidence
Automation is most useful when the team understands the workflow it is automating.
Revised October 6, 2026. Original publication date retained.
Document the current release.
Record the manual steps, configuration dependencies and people involved. Identify the step most likely to fail or delay a release.
Automate a repeatable path.
Use a versioned build, test and deployment workflow. Handle configuration and secrets deliberately and keep the production decision accountable.
Practice recovery.
Define what a failed release looks like and how to return to a stable version. Test the rollback procedure with a representative change.
Measure the change.
- Lead time from change to deployment.
- Observed failed releases in a defined period.
- Time to recover when a release fails.
- Manual steps still required.
Report only what was observed.
Report client results only when the scope, time window and supporting records are available.
