Practical guide
A useful security review defines the workload, the owner of each control and the way it will be verified.
Revised October 6, 2026. Original publication date retained.
Start with access and exposure.
List administrative access, application roles and publicly reachable services. Review whether each permission and endpoint is needed for the workload.
Protect the things the workload depends on.
Include secrets, important data, logging and recovery. Assign an owner to each agreed control and an action for a missing or unresolved item.
Verify the controls.
A setting marked enabled is a starting point. Check whether the expected access rule works, whether a representative event is recorded and whether the team can restore the chosen data.
Leave a usable record.
- Affected workload and agreed scope.
- Finding, owner and proposed action.
- Verification result and relevant evidence.
- Open issues and a review date.
Choose the right responsibility model.
Responsibilities vary with the cloud service you select. Review the provider’s shared-responsibility guidance and the specific application arrangement.
